Nancy Cheng
Architecture & Allied Arts

Nancy Yen-wen Cheng, AIA, teaches architectural design and digital media. Her research focuses on how tools and methods shape the design process. She combines high-tech and high-touch in using a digital pen that generates sketch animations to capture, analyze and teach graphic thinking. She has imported hand-drawn lines to generate computerized wood carvings, looking at how the hand, machine and material each leave their mark.

While teaching at the University of Hong Kong in '93-'96, she developed international Virtual Design Studio collaborations with former Harvard classmates. After coming to Oregon in 1996, she has enriched her teaching with in-house and remote Web projects, using Wikis, electronic portfolios and video-conferencing to share research, design approaches and critical reflections. Her classes have employed these techniques with remote clients in designing physical intentional communities.
