Body
This spring, we’ll take another big step forward in UO’s digital storage transformation. On June 17, 2026, we’ll start automatically deleting older Canvas courses and Panopto videos.
This fulfills our shared duty to care for course-related materials in keeping with UO’s Records Retention Schedule. We’re joining many other universities in adopting this best practice.
What to expect starting June 17, 2026
- Canvas courses five years old or older will be permanently deleted. Routine deletions will occur once per term.
- Videos in Panopto that haven’t been viewed in five years will be permanently deleted. Automatic purges will occur daily.

Assess your course materials
- To keep older course materials beyond mid-June, you must export them and save them elsewhere. Learn about saving Canvas courses and Panopto videos—such as for reuse or for your professional portfolio.
- Please be thoughtful about which recordings you keep and where you store them.
- Reminder: Recordings of remote classes aren’t suitable for reuse if they reveal student names or faces.
Getting Help

Data Security and Records Management
- UO employees are responsible for being aware of the sensitivity of the data they handle, for using approved storage locations that support that policy, and for following other controls associated with different classes of data. The Information Security Office is available to help you identify secure and compliant solutions. (Some UO cybersecurity reference pages require a Duck ID login.)
- Before deleting files or other data, or moving them out of UO systems, employees should be aware of their recordkeeping responsibilities as explained in the short video Records and Our Shared Responsibilities from University Records Management.
