File sharing in OneDrive and SharePoint just got a little more secure. Links to shared files and folders will now default to view-only.

You can still let people edit and comment whenever needed.

Sharing now defaults to view-only

  • The sharing menu now defaults to Can view (eye icon).
  • Recipients can view the shared file or folder but can’t modify or comment.
  • You can change permissions as needed. Options may include Can edit, Can review, and Can’t download, depending on the application.
  • This change affects only new sharing links—not existing links.

Why the change?

  • View-only sharing helps prevent accidental changes to documents and folders, from stray keystrokes to deleted rows.
  • It also helps reduce the chances of unauthorized or malicious edits—a potential risk when files are shared more broadly than intended.
  • This update is part of a broader effort to strengthen the security of Microsoft 365 file sharing at the UO, following recommendations from the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.
